ABOUT THIS PROJECT:
Sabor y Memoria multi-media stage presentation production support

Sol y Canto is looking for support to fund the multi-media elements for their exciting new national touring multi-media musical suite, "Sabor y Memoria," in order to create an ongoing, interactive dialog around the ways in which food and music affect our lives and our sense of who we are.

Composer and MacDowell Fellow Brian Amador’s newest multi-media, pan-Latin musical suite is about a favorite topic - food! Featuring wife Rosi Amador's crystalline vocals and performed by their Latin roots sextet founded in 1994, Sol y Canto with a special guest string quartet, Sabor y Memoria (Flavor and Memory) touches on issues of memory and nostalgia for one’s home country, immigration, hunger, cooking, and of course, chocolate! Everyone will want a taste!

The project promises to stretch the boundaries of the concert experience in exciting ways: Fan-generated content – stories, recipes, and giant projected photos as well as videos – will be part of each performance, and the work invites a wide variety of opportunities for community engagement through partnering with local restaurants, community organizations, and farmers markets.

Sabor y Memoria: a Musical Feast in Seven Courses is a suite for Sol y Canto and a string quartet consisting of seven songs in various Latin rhythms. Brian Amador, Sol y Canto co-founder, received a fellowship to the MacDowell Colony last winter to compose part of it with lyrics addressing several different food-related topics: the need for real food rather than "fas fud," as Brian calls it, the ties to our ancestors that make themselves apparent as we cook, and the power of food to evoke memories.

Two acclaimed string quartets have agreed to perform the piece along with Brian, Rosi, and the other members of Sol y Canto. From Mexico City, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, and from NYC, Sweet Plantain Quartet will be the collaborators, depending on the tour.
