Haitian Music Microfinance In the same way that microfinance institutions are providing capital to entrepreneurs in developing countries around the world, Microfundo is enabling music fans to provide microfunding directly to Haitian musicians - creating work for displaced Haitian artists and long-term economic growth for the Haitian music community.
How To Support This Project Anyone contributing $25 will receive an audio podcast of the Haitian Music Microfinance Benefit show which happened on February 18, 2010 featuring Emeline Michel and Zili Misik - plus membership in Microfundo which includes exclusive podcasts and downloads of all the other live recordings Microfundo will produce during the year.
The New York Times reported recently that nearly half of American households have donated money to help Haiti recover from the recent earthquake. But Haitians need something more fundamental than relief from the present situation; they need jobs that they can count on for years ahead. For this, the Times said, the private business sector is essential to provide long term investment in Haiti.
Microfundo's response: We are in a key position to quickly raise needed private capital (via microfinancing) to invest, patiently, in the Haitian music industry. In the same way that emergency relief efforts have just raised millions of dollars in micro amounts, and in the same way that international microfinancing efforts have provided capital to entrepreneurs in developing countries around the world, music fans can provide permanent jobs and long term economic growth via microfunding to Haitian music and dance communities. Our response has been to create the Haitian Music Microfinance Project - which is aimed at creating support for Haitian artists with both education and microfunding for their music projects and ongoing entrepreneurial activities. This approach is distinct from other types of foreign investment because rather than, say, a foreign clothing company developing, say, clothing manufacturing in Haiti (read sweat shop) which could turn Haiti into a kind of Banana Republic, Republic, Microfundo will enable music fans to invest directly in the microenterprise of Haitian musicians - who will be able to run their own music business.
Our goal is to raise $1 million in six months which would create long term microfunding for Haitian artists and their music and dance projects including:
* Basic educational seminars and consulting to teach Haitian artists the basics of online promotion and distribution of their music
* Production of new independent recordings Tour support and Microgigs - funded by fans in the U.S. that would support Haitian musicians and troupes to tour North America
* State of the Art Recording facilities based in Haiti
* Establishment of Music and Dance Schools with permanent employment for Instructors
* Training and Permanent Employment for recording engineers, sound technicians and other music industry professionals
