Artists from around the world come to the United States to blend the music of their heritage with Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock or Blues. But how often does it happen that an American artist goes to another country to integrate her musical traditions with their music? And if that country is as rich and dynamic musically as Brazil- birthplace of Bossa Nova and Samba- can you imagine the results?
Combine Jazz, Blues and Folk Music with Samba, Bossa Nova and the rhythms of Northeast Brazil. Into this caldron, introduce some sprinkles of traditional and urban sound, from the Caribbean, Colombia, Mali or India. Jennifer Alissa's ambition as a singer is to be a “hybrid” artist: organically creating music that draws from her roots in the United States, uses the flavorings of her new home, Brazil, and is colored by the important in-fluences she's gained through a life filled with travel and exposure to urban multicultural environments. The places Jennifer Alissa has visited and lived inform her interpretation of songs and inspire her choices of repertoire and styles.
Between 2000 and last year, Jennifer Alissa split her time between São Paulo and New York City- drinking in the rhythms, the melodies, the colors and expressions of these two worlds. Now, she's ready to bring this all together into her own unique sound and share it with the world.
She currently lives full-time in Brazil and sings four nights a week at Baretto, the internationally acclaimed Jazz and Bossa Nova Lounge of the Fasano Hotel. She also sings at private functions and wants to expand in this area, booking more corporate events, weddings , etc.; to provide myself with a financial base as she expands into presenting my work at Jazz Clubs and theaters- first in Brazil and then returning to the US for 2-4 months in 2010 to perform and collaborate with artists. She also dreams of singing in South Africa during the World Cup in 2010. The first step to realizing this is to record a CD with which Jennifer Alissa can begin selling her shows and showing her work to a wider audience. She has created a project called "Sabores Americanos"(American Flavors) that will be recorded live in Brazil and produced as a CD. "Sabores Americanos" will draw on the roots of the singer and her accompanying trio (Cuban pianist Luis Castillanos and Brazilian Bass player and drummer- Sidiel Viera and Vitor Cabral) to color Jazz, Latin and Brazilian standards with the mixed flavors of our different cultures.
In addition to recording and performing her music, Jennifer Alissa wants to work work as a cultural producer to facilitate and exchanges between artists. She plans to create an artist collective and retreat center in Brazil. It will also serve as a creative center where performances, workshops and other events can be held or where artists can just come to find the work-space, freedom, support, tranquility and inspiration they need to create. This center will be the headquarters for the cultural projects to be produced through the collective.
Jennifer Alissa knows she can make music with love, with emotion, and with integrity. Her song will become a part of another’s life: joy, tears, a smile; perplexity, quiet thoughts, a wistful memory, determination, inspiration. Someone will hear. Someone will be moved.
